Crystal Xcelsius 4.5 on Windows Vista 64-bit Edition!

If you have noticed, according to the user documentaion of Xcelsius 4.5, Windows Vista 64-bit is not listed under the supporting Operating systems list. Xcelsius 4.5 is not alone, because many applications built for Windows Xp work on Vista 32 and 64 bit. Many Vista 64-bit users have claimed that they had no issues installing and using Xcelsius 4.5. If you have Windows Vista 64-bit edition and facing issues installing or running Xcelsius 4.5, here is how you can get it worked.

One of the pre-requisite for Xcelsius 4.5 was to log on as an Administrator to Install the application, enter the serial number and activate the product. This is still true under Vista, however programs are now under Windows ‘User Account Control’.

User Account Control (UAC) is a new security component in Windows Vista. UAC enables users to perform common tasks as non-administrators, called standard users in Windows Vista, and as administrators without having to switch users, log off, or use Run As. A standard user account is synonymous with a user account in Windows XP. User accounts that are members of the local Administrators group will run most applications as a standard user.

This is a default parameter. Hence, you have to explicitly assign ‘Run as Adminstrator’ in order to write to system directories or the registry.

Instead of launching Xcelsius using the shortcut icon under Programs -> Business Objects -> Crystal Xcelsius 4.5, locate the main executable present at
the following path:

“C:\Program Files\Business Objects\Crystal Xcelsius Designer 4.5\xcelsius.exe”

Right-click on ‘xcelsius.exe’ and choose ‘Run as administrator’

Voila 🙂

First Look: Xcelsius Present 2008

[tab:Article]

Many of you must have heard the news. Business Objects, an SAP company announced the release of Xcelisus Present 2008 today at the Business Objects Influencer Summit held at Boston (click on the News Tab above for more News on Xcelsius Present 2008). James Thomas, vice president of volume products for Business Objects says (for more quotes, click on the Quotes Tab above):

“You can imagine a typical finance director presenting information to his CEO, and the CEO is asking questions. With interactive Xcelsius Present visuals, the finance director can adjust the data to answer questions and test scenarios on the fly, rather than going back to the spreadsheet to do all this work”.

This is a new edition of the many Xcelsius editions offered by Bunsiness Objects. This is not an upgrade from the previous editions, as a matter of fact its a downgraded edition. The major difference between Xcelsius Engage and Xcelsius Present 2008 is its inability to connect to different data sources and to export to various applications. Xcelsius Present 2008 can only be connected to one Data Source and thats MS Excel and the dashboards created can only be exported to MS Powerpoint, MS Word and Adobe PDF. I put together a comparision table listing some of the differences between all 3 Xcelsius editions (Xcelsius Engage Server, Xcelsius Engage and Xcelsius Present 2008) offered by Business Objects, an SAP company. Read on, for the First Look of Xcelsius Present 2008. I uploaded some of the screenshots which show the installation and also the features of Xcelsius Present 2008.

Olympics Medal Tally Dashboard

As promised, here is a dashboard which shows the last 5 Olympics Medals tally for the Top 5 countries. Its not detailed as i intended it to be. It has just one drill down which drives the dials. I’m still adding more drill downs and components. I will update it during this week. Play with it, comments and feedback is appreciated. BTW the news ticker is live from olympics.org news feed. Have fun.

Beijing Olympics Opening Ceremony Slideshow using Crystal Xcelsius

Since I was a kid, I was always excited about the Olympics. My first olympics was the 1988 Seoul Olympics in South Korea. I was 7 and the sport which caught my attention was Swimming. On the contrary I’m a very bad swimmer, I can survive for 5min in water and then I’m sure i’ll drown. Neverthless, I like to watch the sport. My dad recorded the Seoul Olympics on a VHS and i watched the tapes untill the Barcelona Olympics in 1992.

The best part about Olympics is the Opening and the Closing Ceremonies. I was all excited about the Beijing Opening Ceremony for a variety of reasons. Primarily because its Olympics, and to amp it up, the controversies, media hype, the budget etc. Unfortunately the live telecast clashed with my work hours on Friday and i coudnt watch the great spectacle. I searched the web for live streaming (beijing olympics opening ceremony streaming), negative. Had to compromise with audio from NPR.

As i was thinking about the Opening Ceremony, at the back of my mind i was also thinking about how i can use Xcelsius and make some kind of a dashboard or a slideshow or something related to Olympics. First, i thought i’ll make a Comprehensive dashbaord with schedules, countries, athletes etc. But that takes a lot of time, which i dont have right now. So finally I decided to create a slideshow, which is simple and takes less time.

The slideshow is built using 2 Components, Play Control and Slideshow. Yeah, its that simple. Hope you all like it. I’m starting to build the comprehensive dashboard as i write this post. Will be back when its complete.

Thanks
