If you have noticed, according to the user documentaion of Xcelsius 4.5, Windows Vista 64-bit is not listed under the supporting Operating systems list. Xcelsius 4.5 is not alone, because many applications built for Windows Xp work on Vista 32 and 64 bit. Many Vista 64-bit users have claimed that they had no issues installing and using Xcelsius 4.5. If you have Windows Vista 64-bit edition and facing issues installing or running Xcelsius 4.5, here is how you can get it worked.
One of the pre-requisite for Xcelsius 4.5 was to log on as an Administrator to Install the application, enter the serial number and activate the product. This is still true under Vista, however programs are now under Windows ‘User Account Control’.Â
User Account Control (UAC) is a new security component in Windows Vista. UAC enables users to perform common tasks as non-administrators, called standard users in Windows Vista, and as administrators without having to switch users, log off, or use Run As. A standard user account is synonymous with a user account in Windows XP. User accounts that are members of the local Administrators group will run most applications as a standard user.
This is a default parameter. Hence, you have to explicitly assign ‘Run as Adminstrator’ in order to write to system directories or the registry.
Instead of launching Xcelsius using the shortcut icon under Programs -> Business Objects -> Crystal Xcelsius 4.5, locate the main executable present at
the following path:
“C:\Program Files\Business Objects\Crystal Xcelsius Designer 4.5\xcelsius.exe”
Right-click on ‘xcelsius.exe’ and choose ‘Run as administrator’
Voila 🙂
