I had the same isssue.
My Xcelclius said “”An error occurred while communicating with Microsoft Excel. To prevent further corruption, Xcelsius must close.”

The issue is with excel not with Xcelcius
When you double click any excel file it woudlnt open.

Heres what i did.
My excel throwed me an error of “There was a problem sending the command to the program” when i tried opening it by double clicking on it.
Many forums advised to uncheck “Ignore other applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE)” check box in the General area at excel options.
But this too dint work for me.

Basically this is due to conflicts in the compatabiltity mode.
When i checked my OS it was running in Service pack 1 but i was directing excel to use SP2.
To change this settings goto
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12 and right click on excel.exe–> Properties.
Under compatability tab “Run this program in comptability mode for” select the service pack which matches with ur OS
You can check ur OS by right clicking “My Computer–> Properties”
After this your should be able to be open any excel file by double clicking on it.

Here is another solution for people getting the “cannot access excel, exiting xcelsius” problem. If you open up any Excel file on your machine, it will show up as locked and will tell you that you can open it as “read only”, click on “notify” and it will eventually unlock the excel file. Next time you open up an Xcelsius file, it will be able to access excel and work absolutely fine.

Its strange that restarting my machine and all the above solutions did not help at all but this did.

Hope it helps someone else.

@US Army:
Ever get an answer. I have same issue as you. When I close it and look in Task Manager/Processes I see Excel.exe is running. I kill it. It doesn’t seem to fix the problem.
I am using Win 7 Pro x64, Office 2007, Xcelsius Present 5.3.0.0 Build# 12,3,0,670
Win 7 and Office 2007 all up to date on patches as of 6/7/2010.

Doing testing for US Army on Xcelsius application for possible purchase and downloaded the trial for Xcelsius Present 2008. After installing I keep getting an error saying “An error occured while communicating with Microsoft Excel. To prevent further data corruption, Xcelsius must close.” I’ve attempted to install on several machines. Running Windows XP Pro baseline with Office 2007. I have admin rights on the box and even went in and set permissions to full for all users in the security tab under properties of ms office folder in program files.

I was getting this error on a new install. I tried the permission change on the MS Office folder but that did not fix the problem. Then I tried
Regsvr32.exe %Windir%\System32\Ole32.dll
and this allowed Xcelcius to start.
